I own Post Design Co! We are a modern boutique graphic design studio specializing in brand development, website + blog design, print design and art direction for entrepreneurs and small businesses.

I wanted to be a veterinarian or marine biologist.

Since choosing graphic design as my college major, I always had it in my mind that I would love to work from home so I could be there for my kids. I worked as an in-house designer after college at a company with lots of smaller companies under its umbrella. I then worked at a design studio in Dallas for a few years. Around the time right before I got married, I had an opportunity to work from home for someone my dad knew, who owned his own design business. I jumped at the chance to get that experience AND work from home. I did that for a few months, but I soon realized it wasn’t the right fit. Around that time, I was learning more about the new ‘womanpreneur’ movement and quickly had a passion to go out on my own!

I started with people I knew… my mom & stepdad have owned their own business for many years and know a lot of people. I still get referrals from them all the time – which can be a good and bad thing. I kept going with that and continued to get referrals from those clients. This is still something I am trying to navigate though and keep consistent – I would say that has been the hardest part of owning my own business the past few years.

I saw this print from Jenna Kutcher and have always loved it … “Grace will take you places hustlin’ can’t” – I love this because, being a follower of Christ, I know that He is the one who gifts me with what I need to create something beautiful and meaningful. Without Him and his help, I feel like my work really struggles!

Don’t sell yourself short and be picky with who you choose to work with. Nothing is more draining or unfulfilling then working with people who underpay you, don’t appreciate your expertise, and make you design exactly what’s in their mind – which, let’s be real, isn’t always the best! I’ve also learned from other designers in the field that creating personal projects that align with your style and target market are really great for your business. I’ve done this a little bit but want to do more!

I think throughout my freelance journey, the main thing I’ve struggled with is keeping my workflow consistent and gaining new clients, that are dream clients. I think I definitely still struggle with this, but surrounding myself with other creatives, in my field and outside my field, really help and can be very encouraging! Not only this, but learning and soaking up all I can from those designers that are successful. A lot of them offer their insights through Instagram and blog posts, so I try to soak up all the advice I can. Also the things I mentioned above help as well, pricing yourself reasonably and not taking clients that will drain you.

Music: Bethel/Upper Room Worship; random playlists on my Spotify with Indie rock/folk/chill songs. These don’t really inspire my design, but I love binge-watching murder shows on Netflix – the mystery/science really gets me into it!
